Guy Mees

The work of Guy Mees (°1935, Mechelen) is positioned between the poles of painting, sculpture and installation. At the end of the Sixties and the beginning of the Seventies, the artist also experimented with film and video, in which a number of principles from his other work were pursued. (programme Bart De Baere)

Paul De Vree, poesia visiva

The ‘poesia visiva’ of poet-visual artist Paul De Vree (1909-1982, Antwerp) may be situated in the tradition of, among others, Mallarmé, Apollinaire, Marinetti, Van Ostaijen, Van Doesburg and Dadaism. He was part of the artistic and intellectual avant-garde of his time, and his work bears witness to great critical commitment to man and society. (programme Bart De Baere)

Dimitri Vangrunderbeek

In the work of Dimitri Vangrunderbeek (°1964, Brussels), normal objects - such as chairs and lamps - and spaces acquire a completely new meaning. Because of the various operations the artists subjects them to - e.g. wrapping, enclosing, smearing, sawing, sanding, covering, dismantling - they not only lose their original function, but also their characteristic physical properties.

Thé van Bergen [au Paradis]

Throughout his oeuvre, the Antwerp artist Thé van Bergen (°1946, The Netherlands) employed a wide range of materials, techniques and styles. Therefore, his subject is painting itself: how does a picture come about? (programme Flor Bex)

The collection I - autumn 2002

In the past few years, little was done with the M HKA collection, which after fifteen years of collecting already comprises around seven hundred works of art. This will change from now on. The higher floors will be reserved for changing collection presentations: a place where the works of art will be exhibited and where they enter into unexpected mutual relationships, where the various stories, lines and focal points in the collection become obvious and where discoveries will be made.

Richard Venlet [Paramounts Basics (extended)]

This spring, the Brussels artist Richard Venlet (°1963, Australia) represented our country at the twenty-fifth Biennial in São Paulo. This one-man exhibition was adopted as the starting point for a new presentation in the M HKA: the original concept was unfolded and turned inside out and evolved into an exhibition with fifteen artists.

Suchan Kinoshita [First marriage]

'First marriage' is the title of the comprehensive exhibition which M HKA is devoting to Suchan Kinoshita (°1960, Tokyo). The artist who grew up in Japan emigrated to Cologne at the age of twenty in order to pursue a musical education at the institute where the contemporary composer Maurizio Kagel was teaching. Later, she worked for a theatre company in which members alternately assumed the role of actor, stage designer and director. Therefore, it is no coincidence that her work can be situated in many fringe areas: inside or outside the walls of the museum, with or without an active input by the public, recognisable as a work of art or camouflaged as such.
