The Collection as a Character will reflect the current priorities of the M HKA collection: to evaluate the avant-garde tradition of Antwerp, to explore the new multi-polar world order, to discuss the nature of images today, to articulate the importance of the performative and the socialy-engaged in contemporary art.

LONELY AT THE TOP: M HKADEMY

In 2013 the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp will have existed for 350 years. That makes it the fourth oldest art school in the world and the oldest in the Low Countries. The M HKA is joining in the celebrations too: as part of Happy Birthday Dear Academy, which includes two major exhibitions, at the MAS and the MoMu, the M HKA will be welcoming the Academy to its upper floors. The Academy had previously been its guest for the major Academy project that it organised in 2006 together with the Kunstverein in Hamburg, the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven and Goldsmiths College in London, and for the Welcome Home. Tribute to Fred Bervoets project. The Academy is once again being handed the key to the 5th and 6th floors of the museum.

KERRY JAMES MARSHALL

Painting and other stuff

Kerry James Marshall is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of his generation. Strongly influenced by his experiences as a young man, Marshall has developed a substantial body of work that centers on the black subject – in particular, considering the black experience and the politics of African-American identity by contextualizing them through references to history and culture. Also addressing art history, Marshall strives to fill what he describes as the ‘lack in the image bank’, raising pertinent questions about how the art system sustains itself, and the related issues of legitimation, power and marginalisation.
