FRONT ROW with Guy Woueté

Artist Talk, FRONT ROW

24 Apr 2025, 19:00 - 20:30

Guy Woueté is an artist based in Antwerp, Douala and Penja. His artistic practice spans various media, including drawing, sculpture, installation, video, photography, performance and publications. Woueté’s work lies at the intersection of social criticism and activism, exploring and questioning different forms of protest. He critically examines the influence of Western superpowers on political developments in Africa, highlighting the lasting and damaging consequences of their interventions.

In his talk, Woueté will explore how context shapes a specific notion of ‘the artists’ and ‘the art practice’, which he still sees as dominated by the Western canon and worldview. Locating his work between Belgium and Cameroon, he observes and denounces how new forms of colonialism continue to reproduce the Western worldview.
