FRONT ROW with Lieven De Boeck
31 Oct 2024, 19:00 - 20:30
This fall, we will continue the series of inspiring artist talks with great enthusiasm, kicking off with Lieven De Boeck. This artist talk will be moderated by Kathleen Weyts from Glean.
Lieven De Boeck’s recent artistic practice challenges the rigid, heteronormative structures of the art world, offering alternative ways to exhibit and experience art. Drawing from his own queer experience, De Boeck uses queerness to disrupt societal norms and question the relationship between gender and artistic expression. His doctoral research The Archive of Disappearance critiques the rationality-driven approach to art, advocating for emotional resonance over physical form. Inspired by Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica, De Boeck reimagines traditional concepts of authorship and cultural appropriation through a queer lens.
In the artist talk at M HKA Lieven De Boeck will explore Oitcica’s Parangolé Capa 21, Xoxoba — demonstrating that art is not a static artifact but serves as a new original each time it is performed.
The performative presentation aims to spark dialogue on queerness and collaborative art, encouraging critical reflection on their transformative potential.
FRONT ROW is co-organised by M HKA and the artist-run platform NICC through a shared basis in supporting artists, nurturing international perspectives, and being generators of discussion. This artist talk programme in particular is organised through a desire to embody diversity in recognition of the complexity of artistic practice today.
M HKA and NICC warmly welcome you to this monthly series of discussions. Join us for this month’s talk – and if you’re in the FRONT ROW, enjoy a complimentary drink on us at M HKAFE.
“What if queerness could serve as a blueprint for a new art world—one that disrupts the status quo and embraces its power to transform?”
