BOOK LAUNCH ‘PASSIVITY’

Book launch Passivity. Between Indifference and Pacifism
Philosopher and journalist Helena Cazaerck talks with the authors Alexandra Tryanova and Pascal Gielen

‘A pacifist is a rare beast in a bomb shelter.’

The war in Ukraine challenged our idea of pacifism. Should Europe take up arms or not? For the M HKA book launch of Passivity, the authors, Ukrainian curator Alexandra Tryanova and Belgian sociologist Pascal Gielen engage in a dialogue. They will not only talk about the current political situation, but also about passivity in our own daily life. When does pacifism turn into resignation? And, how do our surrounding media and culture contribute to such an attitude?

The booklet Passivity presents short, stimulating texts that sometimes make wild, but also fragile connections and associations. Thinking out loud from the gut by touch, something like that. While speculatively exploring what touches us here and now, the authors try to understand how paradoxes and contradictions in war and life can co-exist.

OPENING INBOX-PRESENTATION

Iteration I: Everything Is Everythang
Marc Bertel (Prijs Hugo Roelandt 2022)

19:00-21:00
5th floor

Iteration I: Everything Is Everythang is an early sketch of a film in the making. Its first rendition, an intentionally opaque collage of sights and sounds recorded in March of this year, revolves around the artist’s family and friends in South Central Los Angeles and gives space to communal moments of everyday life while concurrently trying to tie them into a larger socio-political and -economic context.
