Commitment of M HKA for Ukraine

When the war broke out, M HKA immediately stimulated a rapid and unequivocal condemnation of the war by the art field through our international networks, such as through the Museum Watch Committee the day after the start of the invasion.

M HKA also immediately decided to suspend its partnerships with Russian institutions. Together with our partner museums of the L’Internationale confederation of European museums we launched a campaign to this end that was widely subscribed to, to request the artistic field immediately cease any collaborations with institutions and individuals who have direct ties with Putin’s regime.

L’Internationale is naturally supporting its Ukrainian partner Visual Culture Research Center/Kyiv Biennial and M HKA has, besides our support for artists in Ukraine, also supported the humanitarian efforts of another of its partner institutions, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.

With the activation of artworks by Ukrainian artists from the collection of the Flemish Community, and of M HKA’s long-term interest in Ukraine through the collaboration with the Pinchuk Art Centre, we want to add both a cultural and diplomatic dimension to the humanitarian efforts of Flanders for the refugees. There will be more about that project from April 28 onwards.

You yourself can throw your support behind the urgent initiatives in the cultural sector below.

Our Polish partner within the museum confederation L’Internationale, the Warsaw Muzeum Sztuki w Łodzi, is both a location for humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine, and a focal point for cultural activities by and for the refugees. More than 500 hot meals are prepared for refugees daily. M HKA has already supported our partner museum specifically for this, but more support is needed. We therefore make a warm appeal to you to offer your support. This can be done easily by transferring financial contributions – in euros – to the account of:

Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie
PL62 1140 2004 0000 3012 0763 6055
SWIFT BREXPLPWMBK

with the reference ‘support aid centre’.

If you would like to support artists directly, our partner in Kyiv within the museum confederation L’Internationale, Kyiv Biennial, is the main hub for support to artists who are still in Ukraine.

If you want to support artists and curators who fled the violence of war, you can do so by supporting one of the organisations that facilitate residencies, such as Morpho in Antwerp.
