Cindy Wright — Still Well

Cindy Wright (b. 1972, Herentals) lives and works in Antwerp. In her photorealistic drawings and paintings, Wright draws inspiration from her own photographic images. In her studio, she creates compositions, which she photographs and then digitally edits. In this way, she seeks out the exact image she intends to portray in her works. Wright is drawn to what is usually viewed as repulsive: extreme close-ups of flesh, garbage, rotting fruit, dead animals, and insects are frequently recurring themes. Her works appear exceptionally realistic, and Wright retains a keen sense of the texture of her materials. Her work does not seek to imitate photography, instead, she seeks to explore all the painterly components inherent to the work: colour, composition, subject, perspective, and texture.

Still Well is a reissue of the book All Well, which was published in November 2018 in conjunction with her solo exhibition Dead Poetry at Gaasbeek Castle. This publication includes a new textual contribution in the form of an interview, as well as photographs of some 30 recent works.
On the occasion of this second edition, we are presenting 9 new works in the INBOX space at the M HKA.
