18 Jan - 23 Feb 2024
Preview on Art’s Birthday, 17.01.2025
Over recent years, Janina Fritz has developed a body of work titled Lamps, dreaming of being a fire, comprising illuminated sculptures made from blown glass and ceramics. For the exhibition Can I be in your house at M HKA’s INBOX, a selection of these works will be displayed alongside ceramic reliefs that appear as architectural fragments.
Janina Fritz, born in 1995, lives and works in Brussels and Bremen. She completed her studies at the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam in 2020.
Her work focuses on creating sculptures and spatial environments that explore the relationship between the corporeal and the structures that enclose or interact with it. By investigating hygienic, controlled surroundings that welcome, accommodate or manage bodies and their traces—such as liquids—in both public and domestic spaces, Fritz conjures eruptions born from the very habitats that are meant to contain them. She has exhibited her work at various locations, including Kunsthal Mechelen (2024), Spare Wheel Brussels (2024), W139 (2023), and Laurel Project Space (2021) in Amsterdam. In March 2025, she will be awarded as one of four winners of the recently founded Hiltrud Schäfer Art Prize at Kunsthalle Osnabrück, a former church, where she will develop an in situ sculpture for the space.
