M HKA hand library
The hand library houses an alphabetical overview of the publications of the 200 core artists (from Marina Abramović to Yang Fudong), an overview of the M HKA publications since its inception in 1987 and a selection of theoretical book materials about contemporary visual culture and film.
In addition, the art library contains more than 35,000 books and catalogues, 1,000 magazine titles with 25 current subscriptions and hundreds of documentation folders on individual artists or collectives. The library collection grows daily and sets its sights beyond the standardised image of artworks.
The film library (also located in the M HKA) forms the starting point for any inquiry into, or reflection on, film, video and new media. The collection contains 7,000 books and catalogues, documentation folders with press clippings and 800 magazine titles (titles from 50 different countries) and 41 current subscriptions.

M HKA documentation and research centre
Since 2002, the M HKA has been adopted a systematic practice of research and imaging of the collection. In parallel to this, the M HKA is developing a historiographical vision – with the central question of the international post-war avant-garde – and a contextual research practice. The M HKA collects documentation and archive material with essays, press clippings, audiovisual materials and invitations.
There is also a strong focus on artist books, artist catalogues, artist inserts, artist journals and artist novels; books as carriers of images, the book or journal as an object – and with objects or art as a novel but also ‘ephemera’ or ‘intermediate works’. The Book Lovers’ systematically investigate the phenomenon of artist novels. So far, a collection of 400 titles has been brought together.
